How To Protect Yourself from the Sun at the Beach

Posted: December 29, 2023 by Roger

Zihuatanejo is a paradise of beautiful beaches where you can enjoy the sun all day long. However, it is important to take precautions to protect yourself from UV rays, which can cause sunburn, premature aging, and other health problems. You don't want that for your skin, do you?

In this guide, I’ll show you how to enjoy the sun without hurting your skin. Here are some tips to protect your skin from the sun at the beach while you enjoy your time in Ixtapa Zihuatanejo.

1. Avoid the sun during the middle day

The hours of most solar radiation are from 12 to 4 pm. As far as possible, avoid exposure to the sun for hours. If you have no alternative, then look for shade and use sunscreen. Also stay well hydrated by drinking water regularly.

2. Stay under a shadow

In almost all the beaches in Zihuatanejo you will find restaurants, where you can protect yourself from the sun. On some beaches you can rent umbrellas or even bring your own. On others you can protect yourself under the shade of trees and palm trees. If there is no shade, then it is best to wear a hat. What if you have children? They want to spend all day at sea. A good idea is to alternate the time they spend in the sun and shade.

3. Use sunscreen correctly

Sunscreen will be your ally when going to the beach, as it prevents the harmful effects of sunlight. But which one to choose from among so many on the market? WHO recommends using an SPF 30 sunscreen or higher, or a cream that protects you from UV A and B rays.

How much to use? Enough to cover all skin exposed to the sun. You will need to apply it 20 to 30 minutes before sun exposure, and reapply every two hours or after swimming.

4. Cover your skin completely

Sometimes we forget to protect some parts of our body, such as the back, arms, legs, neck, lips, eyes and scalp. For that, we can use facial creams, or lip cream, sunglasses and hat that protects the scalp.

5. Wear protective clothing

Clothing can protect you from UV rays. Loose-fitting, light-colored clothing can help protect your skin from the sun. A hat with a wide brim will protect your face and neck. Sunglasses will protect your eyes.

6. Moisturize your skin

Did you know that the sun dries the skin? That’s why it’s so important to hydrate your skin regularly, both before and after sun exposure. There are many moisturizers you can use, after sun or post suncare gel.

Additional Tips

Apart from these suggestions, there are other things to consider to protect your skin from the sun at the beach.

UV rays are stronger at sea. The sea acts like a mirror, reflecting UV rays, increasing their intensity and harmful effects. If you’re going for a swim, ensure you apply sunscreen with SPF 50 or higher.

Wind can dry out the skin. Besides the sun, the wind can also dry out your skin, so it’s important to keep it hydrated at all times.

Children are especially vulnerable to UV rays. Because it’s thinner, children’s skin is more vulnerable to damage from UV rays, causing burns and irritation. If you’re traveling with children, protect them from the sun, especially during the central hours of the day.

Do not forget to:

  • Wear good quality sunglasses with UV protection
  • Wear a wide brimmed hat to protect your face and neck
  • Looking for shade during the day
